Luxury SUV With Keys Inside Stolen From Basking Ridge

A Basking Ridge resident is also out $1,500 in Walmart gift cards in a social security scam, police say.

BASKING RIDGE, NJ — A stolen unlocked vehicle and a scam were reported this week in Bernards Township, according to the police blotter.

At some point between, July 26 at about 4 p.m. and July 27 at about 7:04 a.m., a 2019 brown Infinity QX70 4 door with the key fob left inside, was taken from the 300 block of Whitenack Road. The vehicle valued at about $47,000 was found later in the day in Newark by the Newark Police, police said.

Scam

On July 29 at about 9 a.m., a 67-year-old resident of Spencer Road fell victim to a Social Security scam. A person identifying themselves as an agent from Social Security called the resident and said their Social Security number was involved in an investigation regarding money laundering in Texas, police said.

The Social Security agent then forwarded the phone call to the FBI so she could clear the matter up. The victim then spoke with a man, who claimed to be an FBI agent and identified himself as DC-4010. The "agent" told the victim that in order to take care of the matter, the FBI would require $1,500 in gift cards from Walmart specifically, police said.

The victim purchased the cards, called back a telephone number starting with the area code(469), and provided the serial numbers to the cards to whoever answered.
