Nor'easter Blows Through Basking Ridge, No Accidents Reported

The nor'easter brought several inches of snow and heavy wind to Basking Ridge. Here's what to expect in the aftermath.

BASKING RIDGE, NJ — As the "major" nor'easter takes its final bow through New Jersey, quite the cleanup effort is underway. Parts of Somerset County got 7 inches of snow. But luckily for Basking Ridge, many operations ran smoothly.

But Bernards Township police didn't need to respond to any accidents during the storm, according to Det. Lt. Jon Burger. A snowplow caught fire because of mechanical issues, but there were no injuries and the damage was minor, he said.

The National Weather Service hasn't logged a snowfall total for Bernards Township. But elsewhere in Somerset County, Bridgewater and Far Hills received at least 7 inches.

Here's Basking Ridge's forecast as of noon Thursday:

  • Thursday afternoon: A slight chance of snow before 1pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 29. North wind 10 to 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.
  • Thursday night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 16. North wind around 5 mph.

The storm brought the potential for widespread power outages. But Bernards Township has no active outages as of noon Thursday, according to Jersey Central Power & Light.

Although New Jersey schools have the capabilities for remote learning, the Bernards Township School District opted to give their students a snow day.

The NWS placed Basking Ridge and the surrounding area under a winter storm warning, which remained in effect until 10 a.m. Thursday. The NWS expected 12-20 inches of snow in portions of northern and northwest Jersey. Forecasters expect winds of 10-15 mph with gusts up to 35 mph.
