Public Input Sought On Future Of Lord Stirling Stable Property

How would you like to see the 450-acre Basking Ridge property used? Tell the Somerset County Park Commission in its survey.

BASKING RIDGE, NJ — It's time to determine the future of Lord Stirling Stable. The Somerset County Park Commission is seeking public input on programs and public use of the 450-acre property.

The stable significantly curtailed activities last year because of the coronavirus pandemic and will continue to be limited this year. But the park commission's Lord Stirling Stable Advisory Group released a survey that will help them develop a reopening plan.

Current services include the boarding of horses and horse activity that includes riding on trails and the use of indoor and outdoor rings. The property also holds organized dog walks.

“Lord Stirling Stable has been a crown jewel of the Somerset County Park Commission for more than 50 years, and we are committed to maximizing its benefits to our visitors while protecting its environmental sensitivity and
diversity,” said County Park Commission President Mark Caliguire. “This survey and the input from the public will help us determine how to improve our current programs and expand permissible uses of the property for the residents of Somerset County and their guests.”

Lord Stirling Stable has been primarily dedicated to environmental and equestrian activities since its founding. The advisory group — comprised of stakeholders who use the stables and various industry professionals — are exploring how to best restart equestrian programs and allow more people to enjoy the park through new uses.

The property features a main barn and office building, a viewing area overlooking the indoor ring, a pony party pavilion, maintenance areas and three outdoor rings. There are also 14 miles of equestrian trails.

“Lord Stirling is a beautiful park with so much to offer the public," said advisory group member Barbara Roche, "and we want to be sure everyone has a chance to enjoy it."
