Somerset County Programs, Offices Close for Blizzard

A State of Emergency is in effect as Somerset County officials urge residents to stay inside. Many services and programs are cancelled.

Several Somerset County programs and offices will be closed tomorrow, as the county prepares for a two-day blizzard.

“In light of the forecast for tomorrow and the State of Emergency declared by Governor Christie, we encourage residents to stay safe and to remain at home if possible,” Somerset County Freeholder Director Mark Caliguire stated. “Our Public Works Department will work diligently to clear the roads and our Office of Emergency Management will be in contact with all of our towns to ensure the safety of residents.”

The Somerset County Emergency Operations Center (EOC) activated at 2 p.m. on Monday and will remain activated until 10 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 27.

In anticipation of the heavy snowstorm, the following Somerset County programs will be impacted.

County-operated Senior Centers Closed Tuesday

The Raritan, Quail Brook, Warrenbrook, Hillsborough, Manville, Montgomery and the Bernards Senior Wellness Centers will be closed on Tuesday. There will be NO Meals on Wheels deliveries. Meals on Wheels clients are asked to use the non-perishable meals sent out earlier in the season.

Recycling

Somerset County recycling pickups have been postponed for Tuesday, Jan. 27, and may be delayed the remainder of the week due to the predicted severe weather.



Cancellations and Closings

  • The Board of Chosen Freeholders work session and public meeting scheduled on Tuesday, Jan. 27, have been cancelled and rescheduled for Thursday, Jan. 29. The Work Session will be held at 10 a.m. The public meeting will follow at 11:30 a.m.
  • Somerset County Transportation and paratransit services, including SCOOT and DASH shuttle buses, will not run on Tuesday.
  • Somerset County Intoxicated Driver Resource Center classes scheduled from 4 to 10 p.m. on Jan. 26 & 27 have been cancelled. Call (908) 704-6304 to reschedule.
  • The Human Services Advisory Council meeting scheduled on Wednesday, Jan. 28, has been cancelled. The next meeting will be held Wednesday, Feb. 25, at 27 Warren Street in Somerville.
  • The Ted Blum 4-H Center, located at 310 Milltown Road in Bridgewater, will be closed the evening of Monday, Jan. 26, and on Tuesday, Jan. 27.
  • The Richard Hall Community Mental Health Center, located at 500 North Bridge Street in Bridgewater, will close at 5 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 26. The Partial Care and the Dual Recovery Intensive Outpatient Services programs will be closed on Tuesday, Jan. 27. For other services, mental health consumers are asked to call first to check the status of programs. Call (908) 725-2800 or toll free at 1-888-744-4417.
  • The Somerset County Health Department’s flu vaccination clinic that was scheduled on the evening of Monday, Jan. 26, in North Plainfield has been cancelled.
  • The Somerset County Library System closed its branches at 12 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 26.
  • Raritan Valley Community College closed at 2:30 p.m. today. The college also will be closed on Tuesday, Jan. 27.

Offices Closed to Patron Walk-Ins at 27 Warren Street in Somerville

The Office on Aging & Disability Services (908-704-6346 or toll free 1-888-747-1122), the Office of Veterans Services (908-704-6357) and Greater Raritan One Stop Career Training Services will be closed to walk-ins on Tuesday for the safety of patrons.
