Spring Online Teen/Adult Drawing & Painting Classes at Farmstead

All classes will be taught via Zoom. Registration is open now!

Registration is now open for winter virtual online drawing and painting classes with Farmstead Arts Center in Basking Ridge, NJ, taught by Doug Schiller. All classes run for six weeks and are open to teens and adults. $160 members / $175 non-members.

Master the Art of Colored Pencils
Mondays, 2:00 – 4:00 pm; April 12, 19, 26 and May 3, 10, 17

Explore and discover the range and special qualities of watercolor colored pencils. Drawing and painting principles will be applied in the of mixing and blending of colors on paper, overlays, washes, and value judgments. Choices of still life arrangements, landscapes, and and personal compositions. Appropriate for beginners and beyond.

Indoor Studio Landscapes
Mondays, 7:00 – 9:00 pm; April 12, 19, 26 and May 3, 10, 17

Students will complete an outdoor landscape indoors working from direct observation, photographic references and imagination. Step-by-step instructions and demonstrations help develop an understanding of perspective, shading, color and compositional elements as representational three-dimensional spaces are created. Personal understanding and progress reinforced with individual and group critiques. No previous experience required.

Intro to Watercolors
Tuesdays, 2:00 – 4:00 pm; April 6, 13, 20, 27 and May 4, 11

Students will learn basic watercolor techniques, both traditional and non-traditional. Still lives and landscapes will be explored, as elements of composition, design, and basic skills will be refined through color, shading, value, and proportions. No previous experience required.

Oil Painting
Tuesdays, 7:00 – 9:00 pm; April 6, 13, 20, 27 and May 4, 11

Gain a greater understanding and experience working with oil paints and related materials. Basic skills and materials will be reviewed as still life arrangements, landscapes and personal imagery are developed. Demonstrations and personal attention will be given. All levels welcome.

Introduction to Pastels
Wednesdays, 1-3pm; April 7, 14, 21, 28 and May 5, 12

Students will learn basic watercolor or pastel techniques, both traditional and non-traditional. Students will learn how to develop their imagery, working from direct observation and photographic references – such as still lives and landscapes. Elements of composition, design, and basic skills will be refined through color, shading, value, and proportions. No previous experience required.

Drawing & Painting for Adults
Wednesdays, 3:30 – 5:30 pm; April 7, 14, 21, 28 and May 5, 12

Learn how to develop and apply the fundamental principles of drawing and painting and gain a greater understanding of varied mediums and techniques. Light and shadow, color, perspective, and composition will be explored in still life arrangements, nature studies and personal imagery. Demonstrations and individual attention will be given. All levels welcome.

Tromp L’oeil: The Art of Illusion
Thursdays, 4:00 – 6:00 pm; April 8, 15, 22, 29 and May 6, 13

This course will explore drawing techniques that develop illusionistic, three dimensional compositions that “fool the eye.” Learn how to manipulate color, light, and shadow to create optical illusions that make you question your initial perception of what is real. All materials provided, no experience necessary.
