Calm Seas, Low Rip Current Risk, But Few Lifeguards

The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for today for the mainland.

OCEAN COUNTY, NJ - So, we have a beautiful, hot, sunny day ahead. There's just one problem. Few lifeguards are on duty after Labor Day.

The rip current risk is low. But rips can always occur, especially near jetties and other structures.

"The ocean is a dynamic, constantly changing environment, completely unpredictable and dangerous," a post on the Beach Haven Beach Patrol states. "It may appear safe and inviting at the surface, but rip currents can appear out of nowhere."

Skies today will be partly sunny today, with highs in the upper 80s. Winds will be from the west at 5 miles per hour, becoming onshore in the afternoon. There is no lightning threat.

Waves will be around 2 feet, with light swells. The ocean water temperature is 78 degrees, but that could vary, depending upon the beach.

The ultraviolet index is an 8, which the National Weather Service considers very high. So if you are planning on tanning, don't forget the sunscreen.

Low tide at Barnegat Inlet arrived at 9:07. High tide will roll in at 3:22 p.m., followed by another low tide at 10:21 p.m.
