BAYVILLE, NJ — A Central Regional High School student is putting her drumming skills to the test in the international drumming contest, Hit Like A Girl.

Though Siobhan Godsil-Lehmann, 17, has sat behind drums since she was 9 years old, this is her first time entering the contest that features video entries from female percussionists around the world.

“I wanted to enter the competition because there aren’t many female drummers,” said Godsil-Lehmann. “I want to show that women can play just as well as men, and that we can be just as passionate and confident as our male counterparts.”

Her drumming mirrors the style of iconic, classic rock drummers like John Bonham of Led Zeppelin and Keith Moon of The Who, which she says are some of her many musical inspirations.

Godsil-Lehmann is a senior in high school and preparing to attend Ocean County College next year. After two years, she plans to finish her studies in Nashville, Tennessee.

“I want to study music in some capacity,” she said. “I know that no matter what, I want to play live music because it’s my favorite thing to do.”

She submitted her audition video to the contest’s 13-17 age group category.

Due to technical website issues that Hit Like A Girl reported on Wednesday evening, the contest's voting period has been pushed back to Monday, April 19. Voting will then be open until May 2.

When voting reopens, people can visit the Hit Like A Girl contest website to search for Godsil-Lehmann's name and video submission.

Viewers must create an account to cast a vote, but Godsil-Lehmann said anyone can comment beneath her audition video to show support.

“Commenting and sharing is also super helpful and appreciated,” she said.

People have already left several comments expressing their support for her.

“I have watched Siobhan play as a guest drummer throughout the Jersey Shore. She has intense passion for playing and is mature beyond her age!” wrote one commenter.

Another viewer said, “She has raw talent that’s unbelievable! We were able to watch her perform live with a band in Nashville. So talented! Proud of her!”
