SEASIDE HEIGHTS, N.J. — Treat yo' self: Kohr's Frozen Custard, "The Original," turned 100 on Friday, and they're celebrating with a major birthday bash. Among the festivities, they'll provide free custard from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday.

Dozens of bands will perform at the Jersey Shore staple throughout the weekend to mark the occasion. Country artists Bryan White and Matt Kennon will perform from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday.

Kohr's opened for business in 1919, before the boardwalk even developed. Previously, three brothers of Swiss descent — Archie, Clair and Elton — went door to door delivering fresh milk and homemade ice cream to homes and restaurants. They used a horse-drawn wagon and later sold out the back of a Model "T" panel truck.

The brothers purchased an ice cream machine but didn't love the product. So they tinkered with it and called their creation "frozen dessert." They took the machine to Brooklyn's Coney Island, where the brothers sold more than 18,000 cones.

Third-generation owner Greg Kohr told News12 New Jersey that frozen custard has egg yolks in it, which his grandfather came up with. Times have changed, but the Kohr family has continued maintaining the Jersey Shore landmark.
