Rising Temperatures, Rip Current Risk Drops At Ocean Beaches

OCEAN COUNTY, NJ - The rip current risk at Ocean County beaches is low today, probably the first time all month it hasn't been higher.

Waves will be around 3 feet, with southeasterly swells of 2 to 3 feet. The ocean water temperature has dropped to 75 degrees, cooler than it has been all week, the National Weather Service says.

But rips can still occur, anytime, anyplace, especially near jetties and other structures.. So check with your local beach patrol about any problem areas before going swimming. The NWS advises you to always bring a flotation device with you in the water.

Skies today may be cloudy now, but they are expected to become partly sunny. There is a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms, especially later this afternoon. Highs will be in the mid 80s, with winds from the west at 10 to 15 miles per hour. The lightning threat is low, which means there's little chance of thunderstorms.

The ultraviolet index is an 8, which the NWS considers very high. Don't forget your sunscreen.

High tide at Barnegat Inlet arrived at 5:35 a.m. Low tide will roll in at 11:39 a.m., followed by another high tide at 5:53 p.m.
