Nurse Performs CPR After Hitting Pedestrian On Route 9

The nurse, who was driving the car that struck the woman and her boyfriend, worked to save the woman's life, the prosecutor said.

SOUTH TOMS RIVER, NJ — A Toms River woman remained hospitalized in critical condition Tuesday as she continues to recover from being hit by a car on Route 9 late Saturday night.

Danielle Frederick, 26, of Monmouth Avenue in Toms River, was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center following the accident, said Al Della Fave, spokesman for the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office.

The driver of the car, Alyce Gombas, 28, a registered nurse, immediately stopped and when police arrived she was performing CPR on Frederick with assistance of an off-duty EMT, Della Fave said.

"She continued treatment until arrival of police and paramedics," he said. Paramedics were able to stabilize Frederick and she was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center.

Frederick and her boyfriend Vincent Mangione, 27, of Jackson, were walking on Route 9 in the area of 308 Atlantic City Boulevard shortly before 11 p.m. when they were hit by Gombas, who was driving her 2008 Kia Optima north on Route 9.
