From October 1 to October 31, our emergency medical calls included: motor vehicle accidents, cardiac arrests that require immediate medical care and transportation to the local hospital; patients requiring our assistant who fell and could not get back up; patents with abdominal pain due to: constipation, diarrhea, vomiting and or stress which requires hospitalization. Two attempted suicide. We want to thank RWJ Barnabas Health Paramedics, Bayville Volunteer Fire Dept, Berkeley Township Police Department, and Ocean County Sheriff 911 Dispatchers for their help.
On October 9, in front of Central Regional High School on Forest Hill Parkway, the Squad held its first annual coin toss. We were hoping for enough funds to use toward the purchase of life-saving equipment like the LUCAS device, which will improve the quality of chest compressions and sustain life-saving circulation during prolonged resuscitation attempts. With the LUCAS device, fatigue, individual variations, and psychological factors, there is no longer a need to switch CPR providers every two minutes. LUCAS helps provide high-quality and safer chest compressions in patient movement and transportation during prolonged CPR. However, we did not come close to our target of $5,000.00 since the cost for one LUCA is $16,190.00. Most First Aid Squads have LUCAS, which was provided by their township or by grants. We are actively seeking grant funding, but that process takes a long time and consists of numerous documentations.
The Squad did receive grant funding for the purchase of four Life-force USA Bleeding Control Kit. The four kits cost $ 359.96 and will place one per ambulance and have one spare kit available as a replacement. Life-threatening bleeding can occur from emergencies such as vehicle crashes, accidental injuries from natural disasters, and inflicted injuries from such shootings, falling, or deep wounds. The kits contained in a ruggedized, vacuum-sealed pouch provide intuitive and easy-to-use tools proven to help save lives, such as the fastest, safest, and most effective prehospital tourniquet in the world, the C-A-T, quality gauze, shears, and pressure dressings/bandages. Included are step-by-step illustrated, with just in time pictorial instructions, so even untrained providers can help save lives.
