"Throw out the rules when Billy Jonas hits the stage, it's a musical conversation, a sonic celebration, and a gathering of old & young!"

Temple Ner Tamid will be welcoming Billy Jonas and the Billy Jonas Band to the stage on Saturday November 1 at 7:30 p.m.

Jonas of Asheville, North Carolina is a singer-songwriter, percussionist and multi-instrumentalist. He works as both a general audience performer and family entertainer. The band’s music mixes conventional instruments: guitar, bass, marimba with homemade creations such as buckets and barrels, keys and cans, bells and body percussion.

“My favorite instrument is the audience,” said Jonas. “I work to ‘tribalize’ the compositions… to provide an immediate opportunity for the listener to join in.”

As a founding member of the folk music duo, “The Billys,” and current leader of the Billy Jonas Band, Jonas has made use of recyclable items as instruments. His show focuses on enlightening audiences to each person’s inherent musical ability, and the musical potential of common “found objects.”

The Billy Jonas Band features:

  • Billy Jonas, vocals, guitar, re-percussion, originally from Chicago, Jonas has lived in Asheville for 21 years. His first ensemble, the Oberlin Big Bang Theory, was the testing ground for his brand of recyclable, homemade instruments, and neo-tribal hootenanny-ism. Jonas honed his songwriting and singing skills in the duo The Billys in the ‘90s, and subsequently has performed both solo and with The Billy Jonas Band.
  • Ashley Jo Farmer, vocals, re-percussion, adds an exciting vocal dimension to the band’s music with creative, flawless harmonies. A singer/songwriter and band-leader in her own right, with the Ashley Jo Farmer Band, Farmer is quickly becoming a political firebrand and festival favorite.
  • Sherman Hoover, vocals, bass, marimba, re-percussion, Hoover holds down the funky bottom for the band while adding his own innovative harmonies. An extraordinary multi-instrumentalist, arranger, and songwriter with the band Shod My Feet, an eclectic boundary-pushing ensemble of some of Asheville’s finest musicians.
  • Juan Holladay, vocals, re-percussion, Holladay is a “mover and groover,” adding sweet and smokey tenor harmonies. His own band, The Secret B Sides, was voted #1 Soul Band, and #1 R&B / Blues Band in Western North Carolina for three years in a row.
