Bloomfield Suspends Street Sweeping As Cold Weather Approaches

BLOOMFIELD, NJ — Want to help prevent flooding on Bloomfield’s streets this winter? Keep an eye out for piles of leaves and debris on local roadways, officials say.
On Wednesday, Bloomfield town officials announced that after this week, street sweeping will be suspended for the winter. Officials asked for residents to keep watch for obstructed drains, also called “catch basins.”
If the catch basins get clogged, it could result in flooding and "ponding" on the streets of Bloomfield, officials said.

People who spot plugged-up hotspots can let municipal workers know via an online form. Residents can also call the Department of Public Works and Park Maintenance at 973-680-4127 to report obstructed drains.
Anthony Nesto, director of public works and park maintenance, said street sweeping has to be suspended due to the approaching cold weather. The township will still be sending out foot patrol crews to help keep the streets clean, he added.

“I commend our DPW for the work that they do every day to clear our streets so that we don’t have excessive flooding and our neighborhoods remain clean,” Mayor Michael Venezia said. “With the cold weather season approaching, we will not be able to have street sweepers out, so I’m asking our residents to let us know when leaves and debris are piling up on our streets.”
Residents must still adhere to the one day a week alternate side of the street parking regulations, other than municipal holidays, as those schedules are still used at times for different types of work performed by the DPW and township contractors, officials said.
