Costumed Canines Invade Brookdale Park
Annual Strut Your Mutt contest brought out themes inspired by books, movies and food.
Everybody thinks their pets are sweet. Bloomfield’s Marcela Assis, Naomi Zepeda and Fanny Chin decided to prove it by dressing their dogs Lucy, Lexi, Gyro, Shadow and Tyson as vending machines and boxes of candy.
They trotted out the candy canines at this year’s strut your mutt contest, held Saturday at Brookdale Park. The sugary costumes hit the spot, evidently, as the group took first place in the contest’s Best Owner-Pet Costume Category.

Bloomfield’s Damein and Karen Callum took second place in the same category with an Alice in Wonderland inspired ensemble. Dressed as Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum, the Callums dolled up their dogs as Alice and the Cheshire Cat.

Bloomfield Stephanie Peterson and her pet Gizmo,who dressed as a Ghostbuster and Slimer from "Ghostbusters," and took first prize in the Scariest Costume Category.
Joann Vespucci from Bloomfield, Jesse Kaplan from Butler, Toni Lawson from Bloomfield and Aimee Fisher from Glen Ridge and their pets Jessie, Cooper and Mayia dressed as a jar of honey and honey bee to win the County Executive's Choice Award.Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo was on hand to congratulate the winners.
