‘Friend’ Let Family Dog Loose After Move, Bloomfield Shelter Says

Bloomfield Animal Shelter: Browny's former family couldn't take him on their move. So they entrusted him to a friend… who set him loose.

BLOOMFIELD, NJ — Can you help find a new home for Browny, a playful pooch at the Bloomfield Animal Shelter found “terrified” as a stray behind a dumpster last summer?

The Bloomfield shelter announced that as of Monday, the hard-luck dog is still available for adoption. Staff shared the following back story about Browny:

“He was first found as a terrified stray behind a dumpster in July. It turned out, his original family was forced to move and gave him to a ‘friend’… This ‘friend’ claimed that Browny had too much energy for him, so instead of surrender to a shelter, he let him loose. Thankfully his original rabies tag was still attached and we were able to contact his original owner, find out this information and agree to find him a home.”

But Browny’s bad luck didn’t end there, the shelter said.

“Two months later, he was adopted to a family that claimed they’d love him forever. A week later he was returned because they ‘kept him in a room that he would try and break out of.’ Thankfully, he was adopted shortly after by a local loving family where he enjoyed his backyard, new canine brother, and young human sibling to play with. Unfortunately, due to unexpected changes in the household, Browny returned to us in November after not getting along with a new resident.”

Shelter staff said that the pit/lab mix is about 60 pounds and "absolutely deserves a permanent home. According to the shelter:

“He may be 7 to 8 years old, but he is as energetic and playful as a young pup. He LOVES people, doesn’t seem to mind most dogs, and doesn’t like cats. He would do great in most homes with a strong handler. PLEASE help Browny find his final home! Meet him during daily adoption hours Mon-Fri 2pm-5pm, Wed 2pm-6pm, Sat-Sun 1pm-5pm or email adoptatbas@gmail.com for more information.”
