Local Cafe's clever plan to support Bloomfield Animal Shelter

Using football to fundraise for felines and other critters

Anthony’s Cheesecake of Bloomfield was the place to go and spend your hard-earned money in the last 3 weeks. Owners Anthony Lauro and Philip Byrne, in a creative flourish, came up with an ingenious way to help out animals and cash in on the popularity of the Big Ball Game.

Customers could place a friendly wager of $10 on the Super Bowl score and simultaneously donate to the Bloomfield Animal Shelter. In addition, Anthony and Phil are giving out 4 gift cards to their café. Their restaurant has won awards for “Best Brunch Place”, “Best Bang for your Buck”, and “Best Dessert” categories in New Jersey magazine’s annual contests.

Anthony began to advertise this fundraiser as early as January 8th with one board. A local business owner who had been displaced by a recent fire, Roderigo (of Avi Designs) donated both the boards. With community support and his amazing social media reach, the first board was filled in no time. He started a second board which was sold out by Friday night well before the kickoff on February 2nd. A total of $2000 will be donated to the Bloomfield Animal Shelter.

As Phil noted, “Ant and I love football and we are devoted to animals. By joining those two passions we were able to come up with this win-win combination and we are thrilled to see our customers participate. Good luck to everyone!” I did my part and bought one box a couple of weeks ago. Bravo Anthony and Phil!
