Major Roadwork In Bloomfield Kicks Off As New School Year Starts
Bloomfield Safety Director: "We decided to schedule this project after the school year began so parents can get familiar with the area."
BLOOMFIELD, NJ — Major roadwork on Berkeley Avenue in Bloomfield is set to kick off Monday, Sept. 9. The project is expected to last about six or seven weeks, town officials said.
The construction will span from Franklin to Montgomery Street. Work will take place every weekday during the daytime hours.
During the construction, no through traffic will be permitted. However, residents of Berkeley Avenue will have full access to the streets undergoing repairs, Bloomfield officials said.

Scheduled work includes curb replacements along both sides of the street, after which the contractors will begin milling and paving. Milling work will include removing up to two inches of the pavement, so when crews pave over it with new asphalt, the road stays flat, officials said.
In addition to paving and curbing, ADA-compliant handicap ramps will be provided at all intersections and enhanced pavement striping to promote traffic calming, officials stated.

The project is being funded by a $491,000 grant from the New Jersey Department of Transportation. Work is anticipated to be completed within 60 calendar days, weather conditions permitting.
Officials said the contractor for the project, A. Takton Concrete Corp., has done previous work for the township, including reshaping concrete sidewalks.
Bloomfield Police Department personnel will be on site during “every phase of work,” officials stated.
Bloomfield Director of Public Safety Samuel DeMaio said the work will take place just north of Fairview School.
“We decided to schedule this project after the school year began so parents can get familiar with the area, and be better able to utilize our detour routes,” DeMaio said. “Detour signs are posted and local residents will be given access into their homes. Detour routes will keep all surrounding streets both-ways, minimizing inconvenience for residents.”
