Car Thieves Nabbed After Trying to Elude Officers, Police Say

Trio jumped out of stolen car as it was still moving on Oak Street before being arrested, police said.

Three teens in a stolen car attempted to elude officers and jumped from the moving vehicle on Oak Street before being apprehended Monday night, Bloomfield Police said.

Jamale Jeanty, 19, of Bloomfield and Romel Fairley-Jones, 18, of Bloomfield were charged with receiving stolen property. A 16-year-old was also arrested.

Officers Caesar Mazzeo and Argenis Vargas saw a silver Nissan Rogue in the area of Montgomery Street and Oakland Avenue just before 11 p.m. Monday that fit the description and had the same license plate number of a car that had been reported stolen and earlier seen in the area by an officer using LoJack, police said.

When officers tried to stop the Nissan, the driver allegedly sped up to elude the pursuing officers.

Police said the driver blew through several stop signs before the occupants jumped out of the still-moving car on Oak Street and ran from the scene. While the car crashed into Bloomfield police cruisers and a parked car, police said no injuries were reported.

Officers Devin Lopez and Jennifer Horn found and arrested Fairley-Jones on Spruce Street, while Detective Michael Menzel found the third occupant, a 16-year-old, and took him into custody, police said.

The three teens were transported to the police station where the juvenile was turned over to the Youth Aid Division and the two others were processed and charged with receiving stolen property with a court date of Feb. 12 scheduled.

Jeanty was released on his own recognizance. Judge Paparazzo set bail at $5,000 for Fairley-Jones.
