Bridgewater Mourns Hero Who 'Risked His Life To Help Others'

BRIDGEWATER, NJ — The Bridgewater community is mourning the loss of a hero. Thomas Marshall Sr., who died on Sunday, had given his life to helping others.

Marshall Sr. volunteered in Bridgewater Township for more than 44 years between the Finderne Rescue Squad and the Finderne Fire Department.

"He has spent his entire adult life risking his life to help others. He took the responsibility of mentoring all new firefighters, showing them the equipment on the rigs, and preparing them for when an emergency occurs. The community lost a great man, but the community was also lucky to have had such a great man," said Marshall's son, Tom.

A Bridgewater resident, Marshall Sr. worked for the Department of Public Works for 16 years. He began his career with Bridgewater in the Parks Division and then moved on to the Buildings and Grounds Department and became Foreman of the division. He was responsible for the maintenance at all of the Township buildings.

"I was distraught when I heard the news of Tom Marshall's passing this past weekend. Tom's dedication and competence as a public servant made him a part of the bedrock of this community and he will be sorely missed. I wish to pass my condolences to, of course, Tom's family and close friends but also to all Bridgewater residents who have benefited from Tom’s hard work, volunteerism and kindness over the years," said Bridgewater Mayor Matthew Moench.

Marshall is known for always helping his fellow township employees or residents who visited the municipal buildings.

"Even on his days off, Tom would check on our buildings to make sure things were running smoothly," according to Bridgewater Township Government. "Tommy's can-do attitude will be missed. Our condolences to his family and friends on their loss."
