Educators have been reimagining classrooms to comply with Covid-19 protocols in a virtual and in person setting. Electives, such as fashion design and art, not only provide career exploration for students but they also provid a creative outlet during this challenging school year, giving students a sense of connection and normalcy when so many have felt isolated and stressed.

One student, Angela Xankis, took the opportunity to grow her knowledge and her passion for fashion design. Growing up Angela Xankis had heard stories from her grandparents who immigrated to America and found a living working in the garment industry. Their stories coupled with her growing interest in fashion trends led her to a high school fashion design course.
Angela took the first level of Fashion Design with Ms. Santos at Bridgewater Raritan Regional High School in September. She successfully constructed pajama pants in a completely virtual class setting. In the spring Angela attended her second fashion design course and threw herself into constructing garments. She designed a tulle skirt and spent the semester learning how to drape, creating original patterns and completing her own original design. She leveraged her shorter school days to add on more design projects, created her own garments outside of the classroom setting. Angela hopes to continue studying different aspects of the fashion industry after graduation, and one day persue her dream job working for a fashion design firm.

Owen also took two semesters of design, finishing the year with a men’s bbq apron he designed from upcycled jeans. He’s designing a leather pocket to add on for detail.
