The scholarships, the release said, are used for each student’s first year of matriculation in college.

"These scholarships recognize athletes who have succeeded in far more than baseball and softball," Duke Baxter, of ZONED Sports Academy, said in the release. "They recognize each of these athletes as well-rounded individuals, whose accomplishments reach well beyond the diamonds they play on. They are true champions in their schools, homes and communities. These scholarships provide a way for us at ZONED to recognize and give back to these young role models, as well as for those who will follow in their footsteps in years to come."

This scholarship is awarded based on a scholarship process, and athletes have to be of outstanding character and integrity, and serve in leadership roles on their baseball or softball teams. The application also looks at academic transcripts and community service work.

ZONED works with athletes to improve their skills and offer more opportunities.

The other recipients of the scholarship are:

  • Sarah Merlo, of Hunterdon Central Regional High School
  • Alexander Christian, of Spotswood High School
  • Thomas Marcinczyk, of Middlesex High School
  • Sarah Freyre, of Jackson Memorial High School
  • Sam Capolongo, of Montgomery High School
