Flood Gates Open, Delayed School Openings: Updates In Somerset County

While water levels begin to recede, some rivers remain flooded in Somerset County on Tuesday.

SOMERSET COUNTY, NJ ? The East Street Flood Gates have been opening in Bound Brook after the area experienced major flooding on Monday.

As the communities begin to recover from the storm, some - Hillsborough Township and Manville schools - are calling for a delayed opening due to road conditions.

Decisions on whether the schools will be closed altogether on Tuesday will be made later in the day on Tuesday.

Road Closures

Most of the major roadways in Somerset County and bridges, such as Two Bridges connecting Branchburg and Bridgewater and Route 206, have reopened as of Tuesday around 6:15 a.m.

Some roads remain closed including:

  • Dukes Parkway East, Hillsborough
  • Millstone River Road, Hillsborough
  • Blackwells Mills Road, Hillsborough
  • Basilone Bridge, Hillsborough/Raritan
  • Riverside/Clawson, Hillsborough
  • Blackpoint, Hillsborough
  • Opie Road, Branchburg
  • Blackpoint Road, Branchburg
  • South Main Street from South 5th Ave. to Wilhousky St., Manville
  • Roosevelt Ave. between South Main St. and South 7th Ave., Manville
  • Kennedy from Whalen to South Main St., Manville
  • The southern end of Jefferson Avenue and Greenbrook Road between Methven and Mountain Parkway, Green Brook.

Drivers are reminded not to drive around barricades and to "turn around, don't drive."

In Hillsborough, Flagtown Fire/Rescue - Hillsborough Volunteer Fire Co. #1 made six water rescue-related dispatches. Country Hills Volunteer Fire Company also made several water rescues for cars stuck in flooded roadways.

Rivers

Major flooding remains at the Millstone River at Griggstown. The river is currently at 16.5 feet high. As a result, a flood warning remains in effect through 7 p.m. on Wednesday in the area.

The Millstone River at Weston, Millstone, and Blackwells Mills also remains at moderate flooding as of 6 a.m. on Tuesday.

The Raritan River at Bound Brook is also at the moderate flooding stage of 31.7 feet.

The Raritan River in Manville just dipped into the minor flooding stage and is currently just below 17 feet high.

The North Branch Raritan River at South Branch has also just dipped below the minor flooding stage to near flooding. It is currently just below 8 feet high.

The Passaic River near Millington is also at the minor flooding stage at 8.2 feet.

Outages

Power outages are, for the most part, resolved in Somerset County. PSE&G is not reporting any while JCP&L is reporting 45 customers without power.

The outages are being reported in Bernards Township, Bernardsville, Branchburg, Bridgewater, Far Hills, Hillsborough, and Warren. Most of the power is not expected to be restored until 2 p.m. on Wednesday.
