The New Jersey Department of Transportation explains the bubbling on the freshly paved portion of Route 22 West in Bridgewater.

BRIDGEWATER, NJ — Have you noticed a bumpy ride on the freshly paved portion of Route 22 West in Bridgewater? New Jersey Department of Transportation explains why.
It has been decades since the concrete portion of Route 22 in Bridgewater was completely redone. Last summer NJDOT ripped up and repaved the highway from Interstate 287 north through Route 202/206.
However not even a year later many commuters and local residents have noticed what appear to be small bumps or bubbling cropping up in the freshly paved highway.

"The recently completed pavement preservation project applied a slurry seal and high performance thin overlay (HPTO) to this portion of Route 22, which extends the life of the roadway," said NJDOT Spokesman Steve Schapiro. "There are occasions where small bubbles or blisters may appear temporarily due to weather changes, but they generally are not permanent."
Schapiro noted the bubbling is typically in "the center of the lane and not in the wheel path, and pose no risk to safety and have minimal effect on ride quality."

When asked if any repairs will be made to the highway, Shapiro noted the NJDOT is studying the cause, and will make any necessary repairs if there is a safety issue.
