Since Earth Day was first celebrated in the U.S. in 1970, the event has grown into a massive international event recognized in 193 countries worldwide. Earth day was established in part as a reaction to an 1969 oil spill in Santa Barbara. It is celebrated each year on April 22 so it doesn't conflict with most major religious holidays and doesn't come too close to spring break or final exams for students.
