Somerset County to Offer Butterfly Garden Workshop
The Somerset County Park Commission Leonard J. Buck Garden will offer the 'Create a Butterfly Garden' workshop on Tuesday, May 23.
From The Reitman Group: The Somerset County Park Commission Leonard J. Buck Garden has scheduled “Create a Butterfly Garden” workshop on Tuesday, May 23, 2017 from 10:00 A.M. to 11:30 A.M. The session will take place at Leonard J. Buck Garden, 11 Layton Road in Far Hills, New Jersey.
Cynthia Hedin, Somerset County Master Gardener, will lead the workshop.
Because butterflies and caterpillars have particular preferences in the food they will eat, planting what they like will increase the likelihood of attracting them. The workshop will instruct participants on attracting Monarch butterflies with milkweed, reaching out to black swallows with plants in the carrot family, and many more plants that will attract and sustain the butterflies found in New Jersey.

Buck Garden is a naturalistic setting incorporating large rock outcroppings creating varying exposures and microclimates that enable different plant associations to thrive. Tucked among the rocks are rare and exotic rock garden plants. The wooded trails connecting the outcroppings are lined with beautiful wild flowers that have flourished and multiplied through the years. Throughout the garden grow various ferns. At the base of the valley walls, azaleas and rhododendrons produce a colorful display in May and early June. The Buck Garden's peak bloom is in spring, when favorite wildflowers, diminutive alpines, and delicate azaleas all compete for attention, but there is something interesting in bloom almost every week of the year.
