Tenure Charges Officially Filed Against BRHS Band Director

Decision concerning Larry Markiewicz's employment will be made by the Commissioner of Education.

Tenure charges have officially been certified against Bridgewater-Raritan High School band director Larry Markiewicz, who has been suspended from the district since early March.

Board of Education President Patrick Breslin said Tuesday that tenure charges were originally filed against Markiewicz May 13.

"He and his attorney received a copy of the charges and were afforded a 15-day period to file a response," Breslin said. "No response was received."

Markiewicz was initially suspended with pay in March pending further review and consideration by the superintendent. , asking the board to reconsider and let him return to the school.

On Tuesday, Breslin said, the board voted in favor of certifying the charges to the Commissioner of Education. Board Administrator Peter Starrs said there were eight votes in favor of certifying those charges, zero against and one abstention.

"The matter is now in the hands of the commissioner," Breslin said. "The board cannot comment any further on the matter of Larry Markiewicz."

Markiewicz will remain suspended pending a final determination by the commissioner.
