400-Acre Fire At NJ State Forest Contained

A fire that broke out at Brendan T. Byrne State Forest in Burlington County has been 100 percent contained.

VINCENTOWN, NJ — A fire that broke out at Brendan T. Byrne State Forest in Burlington County has been 100 percent contained, according to officials. It was limited to 407 acres in size. No homes or structures were damaged in the blaze.

"The New Jersey Forest Fire Service has achieved 100 percent containment on a wildfire near Pea Patch and Turkey Buzzard roads in Brendan T. Byrne State Forest," the service said in a statement.

The fire broke out at about 10:20 p.m. Monday night and raged for about 24 hours before being brought under control, officials said.

Fire officials say the dry conditions are likely a contributing factor since little rain has fallen in the area recently.

Although no cause of this fire has been determined, officials have said that dry conditions and the lack of rainy weather may be contributing factors for fires at this time of year.

Burlington County is one of 10 counties in the state in which open burning is currently banned, as of 8 a.m. Wednesday. The others are Monmouth, Ocean, Middlesex (south of the Raritan River), Mercer (except Hopewell Township), Atlantic, Camden, Cumberland, Gloucester and Salem counties. The ban was prompted by the two fires. New Jersey's statewide fire threat was "high" as of Tuesday evening, according to the forest fire service's dashboard.
