Cinnaminson Lacrosse Player Set For National Tournament

Maya Zullo will play in the 2019 Maverik National Lacrosse Classic next week.

CINNAMINSON, NJ — Maya Zullo will head to Holy Cross Prep Academy next year with two years experience playing in a major lacrosse tournament under her belt.

Zullo, a middle school student from Cinnaminson who will be a freshman at Holy Cross in September, will play as part of Team South Jersey in the 2023 Middle School Girls Division of the 2019 Maverik National Lacrosse Classic to be held July 15-18 in Frederica, Delaware at the DE Turf Sports Complex.

“I’ve always played lacrosse, but I never pictured myself playing in big tournaments like this,” said Zullo, who has been playing the sport since she was in third grade. “It’s fun to see the older players go out there and get scholarships.”

Zullo tried out for the tournament last year, and made it as an alternate. She ended up filling in for Team Wisconsin, which needed extra players. They won a couple of games, and Zullo said it was an overall good experience.

Competition for a starting spot in New Jersey is tough, but Zullo made it this year. She is one of 18 girls on the squad who will compete against teams from North Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, New York, Maryland and Virginia, as well as regional teams from the South, Midwest and Southeast. She plays defense, and looks forward to seeing the high school and college players at the tournament.

“It’s very exciting to see her do what she loves,” her mother, Jodi, said. “We’re so proud of her. It’s a challenge to make the New Jersey team because there’s more competition around here, and she made it.”

The tournament brings together 2,000 athletes from across the country for a competition in front of more than 200 college coaches. DE Turf features 12 synthetic fields on more than 170 acres. To see the full roster for each team in the tournament, visit nlcnation.com.
