Longtime Philadelphia Announcer, South Jersey Native Bill Campbell Dies at 91

The announcer who called the Eagles’ 1960 NFL Championship Game victory, Wilt Chamberlain’s 100-point basketball game and the 1964 Philadelphia Phillies’ collapse, has died.

Bill Campbell, a Haddonfield native, died at the age of 91 Monday night.

He began his broadcasting career when he was 17 years old, according to the Courier Post. He moved from Atlantic City to Lancaster. He came to Philadelphia in 1942. His career spanned seven decades.

He was the announcer for the Philadelphia Warriorsbasketball team from the time of their inception in 1946 until they moved to San Francisco.

He was the announcer for the Philadelphia Eagles from 1952-66, the Phillies from 1963-70 and the 76ers from 1972-81.

He also worked with WIP when it switched to an all-sports format in 1987.

He is part of the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame, and was named their Person of the Year in 2008. He was also the Curt Gowdy Award winnerin 2008.
