Real Life Pirates In New Jersey Focus Of Cinnaminson Library Event

CINNAMINSON, NJ — Real life pirates spent some time at the Jersey Shore. Books have been written about them, and now families have a chance to learn those stories from those who wrote them firsthand.

Lee Ireland, Ph.D., author of “Pirates & Their Hidden Treasures” will lead a discussion about Blackbeard in Brigantine and Captain Kidd in Cape May during a “Meet the Author” event at the Cinnaminson Library next month. “America’s Pirates and Their Treasure” is set for Monday, Sept. 18, 6:30 p.m.

Attendees will:

  • learn why Philadelphia became a “Pirate-friendly port;”
  • hear the true story of five Lewes, DE men who were arrested as “Merchants to the pirates;”
  • investigate Maryland's homegrown pirates, “Clarke” and “Sparrow;”
  • identify likely hunting grounds for pirates’ buried treasure, including the Delaware River in PA, Burlington, Mercer counties; and
  • learn about the pirates' exploits, pirate culture and how they came to be involved in the profession.

This presentation is geared for ages 10 and up. Registration is required.
