WESTAMPTON TOWNSHIP, NJ — Want to pick up a Wawa hoagie without getting out of your car? The popular chain is now offering that service, and it is coming to Burlington County.

Westampton Township recently approved Wawa's application for a new drive-thru service at the soon-to-be-built store, store officials confirmed on Thursday. No date has been set for the store's opening.

The plans for a new store were previously approved by the township, and Wawa is seeking approval to add a new initiative to create the first drive-thru store in the chain, the store said in a statement.

Wawa is accelerating plans for the new initiative due to the coronavirus pandemic. It may be expanded to other stores at a later date.

The service would be available from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. for a limited number of menu items, including coffee, Sizzlis, built-to-order hoagies, soups and sides and smoothies.

“Wawa continues to test new store concepts with the latest being drive thru, providing an opportunity for our customers to still experience and enjoy their favorite Wawa products while remaining inside their vehicle,” said Terri Micklin, Head of Construction for Wawa. “Steps such are these are critical in providing new ways to access Wawa, increase convenience and provide new options for service.”

The model will use the space between the store and the fuel canopy, which will include menu boards, queuing for up to 19 vehicles, and a pick-up area.

“We are hoping to learn from the layout, workflow and traffic flow at this location, as we continue to explore alternatives for longer term application to our stores post-COVID-19,” Micklin said. “We appreciate the opportunity to partner with Westampton officials, who are providing us with the support to enable us to quickly modify the plans, add the drive-thru features, and continue the project with the goal of opening this new store before year's end.”

The new Wawa in Westampton was first approved in 2018, according to the Courier Post. The store will offer a dozen fuel pumps and three spaces set aside for curbside pickup.
