Edison Proposes Full-Time Mayor Position With $85K Salary Hike

A new ordinance proposes the position of mayor to be full-time due to "increased demands and responsibilities."

EDISON, NJ – Edison’s Town Council is proposing a new ordinance to make the position of the mayor full-time. The council will vote on the ordinance at a meeting on Monday evening.

The Edison Municipal Council said the town currently needs a full-time mayor due to the “increased demands and responsibilities.”

The ordinance also proposed to increase the salary of the mayor from $50,000 to $135,000.
If passed, the ordinance will take effect on Jan.1, 2022.

The council said a full-time mayor was needed “with respect to the Township’s oversight of health and public safety, finances, operation of a water utility authority, the development of a comprehensive economic development plan, and code enforcement.”

Currently mayor Thomas Lankey serves as Senior Vice President for JFK Healthcare System in Edison.

The meeting will be held Monday at 6 p.m.
