Edison Issues Heat Advisory As Temperatures Soar In NJ

Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room and check on vulnerable neighbors - here's what to do:

EDISON, NJ — Edison Township issued a heat advisory through Wednesday, as temperatures are expected to soar to 100 degrees or higher this week.

The township has advised residents to drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room and out of the sun. They’ve also advised residents to check up on vulnerable relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.

“Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening.” the township said.

Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothes when possible. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments.

Those overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heatstroke is an emergency and residents should call 911.

A heat advisory has been issued across the state from Monday at noon to 8 p.m. on Wednesday as heat index values (apparent temperature) up to 104 degrees are expected.

A hazardous weather outlook relating to heat exhaustion has also been issued through July 4 in NJ counties including Middlesex.

The highest heat index values will occur Wednesday with "near-record temperatures," AccuWeather says. The heat and humidity may last into Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service. The service urges New Jerseyans to limit time spent outside as hot temperatures and high humidity can cause heat illnesses to occur.
