SECAUCUS, NJ — Secaucus police say that from March to May, this 25-year-old Edison man broke into numerous cars at the Xchange complex at the Secaucus Junction train station, and even stole two of the vehicles.

Starting in March of this year, Secaucus police said they started receiving reports of car break-ins in the parking lots around Xchange and on Riverside Station Boulevard. Nearly all the cars had been left unlocked.

When he was sworn in as chief earlier this year, Secaucus Police Chief Dennis Miller said he would be creating an "anti-crime unit" specifically to deter vice crimes in town (drug dealing, prostitution, etc.) It was that squad that was doing surveillance in the Xchange parking lots this past Saturday, May 23, when they said they observed Ahmed Abid attempt to enter several parked cars.

He was immediately placed under arrest. Police say they have evidence that links Abid to 13 other car burglaries around Xchange. Additionally, they say Abid was identified as the person who stole a 2012 Honda Civic on March 31 of this year and a 2019 Acura RDX on or about May 16.

Abid, 25, of Edison was charged with 13 counts of burglary, 10 counts of theft and criminal attempt. He was taken to the Hudson County Jail.

"This arrest would not have been possible without the cooperative effort between Xchange building management and Secaucus police," said Secaucus Police Chief Dennis Miller. "I am extremely proud of the work of the anti-crime unit and detective division."

"However, the police can not do it alone and remind all residents to LOCK YOUR DOORS," said the town police chief.

Police say additional charges may be filed.
