Edison Man Hit Trying To Cross Rt. 1 Sunday Night

A local man was trying to cross Rt. 1 in Edison Sunday evening, and was hit by an oncoming car. This happened at Plainfield Avenue.

EDISON, NJ — Not only was a utility worker hit in a hit-and-run in Metuchen Monday morning, but a man was also struck by a car while trying to cross Rt. 1 in Edison Sunday evening.

Both men are at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick; the Metuchen utility worker is in critical condition.

The 42-year-old Edison Township man, identified by police as Charles Stuermann, was hit by pick-up truck as he crossed Rt. 1 on foot near Plainfield Avenue. Police say crossed Rt. 1's southbound lanes, against a green light, and got hit by an oncoming car at 5:25 p.m. Sunday.

Stuermann is listed in intensive care at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital.

Stuermann was accompanied by another pedestrian. Witnesses told police his companion ran across the busy highway, but did not stop or return to the accident scene after Stuermann got hit.

The pickup truck’s driver, an 18-year-old New Brunswick woman, was operating a 2007 Dodge Ram on a driver’s permit. Police said she was upset, but uninjured. She has not been charged pending the outcome of the police investigation.
