Edison/Metuchen: State To Build Ramp From Rt. 27 To 287 North

State legislators have secured funding to build an access ramp from Rt. 27 onto 287 north, taking truck traffic off Edison/Metuchen streets.

METUCHEN, NJ — If you live in Edison or Metuchen, we have good news for you: Your local state legislators have secured funding to build an access ramp from Rt. 27 onto 287 north, taking commuter and truck traffic off Edison/Metuchen residential streets and out of neighborhoods.

Currently there is no ramp leading onto Rt. 287 north from Rt. 27, forcing trucks to drive through small residential streets in Metuchen and Edison, towns where children walk to and from school daily.

This is first, and foremost a safety concern for the people residing in both towns, said the district reps from Legislative District 18, state Sen. Patrick Diegnan (D-South Plainfield), Assemblywoman Nancy Pinkin (D-East Brunswick) and Assemblyman Robert Karabinchak (D-Edison).

They announced last Thursday they secured $450,000 to build the ramp.

“I have been fighting for funding for the I-287/ Rt. 27 ramp for years now and it is great to see the governor listening to our concerns and moving forward on this project that is vital to the safety and quality of life of residents of Edison and Metuchen,” said Karabinchak.

The goal of the ramp is to will ensure that large heavy trucks do not disrupt neighborhood activities. It will also hopefully ease truck traffic, which causes long traffic jams for local commuters.

“The ramp will improve safety and improve how walkable and enjoyable these towns are for our residents,” said Pinkin. "It will cut down on the traffic, noise, and air pollution in our local neighborhoods.”

“This access ramp is crucial to preserving the integrity of the residential areas of Metuchen and Edison,” said Diegnan. “It will significantly decrease the amount of time residents spend commuting to work.”
