EDISON, NJ — Following Governor Murphy’s announcement Wednesday that parks will reopen across the state, Edison Township Mayor Thomas Lankey announced all Edison parks will also reopen this Saturday at sunrise.

On April 7, Murphy closed all state and county parks, but left municipal parks to the discretion of each town. Edison was one of the few towns in New Jersey to close its town parks.

“We first closed our parks almost a month ago," said Lankey. "Our parks were dangerously overcrowded with visitors who were not observing social distancing rules. The resulting strain on our First Responders and our healthcare professionals had reached a tipping point."

The National Park Service has not announced when they are reopening Sandy Hook.

Playgrounds, restrooms, pavilions, and visitor’s centers will remain closed and picnics and team sports will still not be allowed.

However, “passive recreation” will be allowed at all Edison Parks, including running, hiking, biking, fishing, boating, kayaking and horseback riding.

The Metuchen-Edison Community Dog Park on Whitman Avenue and the Edison Boat Basin and River Walk on Meadow Road will also reopen this Saturday.
