Metuchen Converting New Street To One-Way Traffic

Under the new plan, the south side of New Street will be closed seven days a week, to help local restaurants and businesses.

METUCHEN, NJ — The Borough of Metuchen along with the Metuchen Downtown Alliance and the Metuchen Area Chamber of Commerce will be converting New Street to one-way traffic, beginning Friday.

“The purpose of this program is to continue to do everything we can to help our downtown businesses thrive in the wake of the pandemic,” Mayor Jonathan M Busch, said in a Facebook post.

Under the new plan, the south side of New Street will be closed seven days a week, so that local restaurants can set-up well-ventilated heated spaces, and local businesses can make use of the pedestrian-friendly area.

The road closure this summer proved to be beneficial to local businesses, said Busch in his post.

“This new plan, like the last one, is designed to be flexible as we continue to monitor its success as well as applicable State guidance and restrictions,” said Busch.
