Nor'easter Impact: 7 Inches Snow In Edison, 4.6 In Metuchen

Cleanup is underway in both towns, as the nor'easter leaves behind a wintery mess.

EDISON, NJ – A “major" nor'easter rolled into Middlesex County area on Wednesday.

The National Weather Service labeled the "major" system a "nor'easter" since it's expected to produce strong, sustained damaging winds and precipitation over a 24-hour period on Wednesday.

As of 11:45 p.m. Wednesday, Edison received 7 inches of snow and Metuchen received 4.6 inches. On Wednesday morning , Route 1 northbound and southbound at Pierson Avenue was shut down in both directions.

All garbage and recycling in Edison has been cancelled for Thursday. It will now been collected on Dec. 21. Recycling for Sec. 9 will be collected on Saturday. Leaf bag collection will be extended through Dec. 22

The Edison Board of Education's caucus meeting scheduled for Thursday now stands cancelled.

Metuchen Public School announced Wednesday, it will follow an all-remote and early dismissal schedule on Thursday, "so kids and can be kids and play in the snow by mid-day."

Metuchen also offered free parking in the Halsey Street Lot until Friday, for residents who don't have parking space.

Some parts of New Jersey received more than 11 inches of snow.

The "major" nor'easter hit the Garden State on Wednesday and shut down trains and buses, and caused crashes and other problems. More than 12,000 power outages were reported across the state, and more than 200 crashes were reported.

State officials said they have more than 400 pieces of road equipment available to make the roads safe, even though fewer people are taking to the roads because of the coronavirus outbreak.

AccuWeather was saying the system could be the "most significant winter storm in several years," one that could potentially become highly impactful and disruptive as the first round of coronavirus vaccines continue to be shipped around the country.

Edison

  • Thursday: A chance of snow before 4 p.m. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 33. Northeast wind 10 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 35 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50 percent. New snow accumulation of 1 to 3 inches possible. Tonight, mostly cloudy, with a low around 17.

Metuchen

  • Thursday: Snow, mainly before 11 a.m. Cloudy, with a high near 33. North wind 15 to 20 mph. Winds gust as high as 40 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent. New snow accumulation of around an inch possible.
