2020 Recycling Report

Hunterdon County Recycling Drop Off Programs Conducted Safely And Successfully During 2020

Despite the challenges of the covid-19 pandemic, Hunterdon County’s recycling unit held five safe and successful drop off events this year for Electronics and Household Hazardous Waste, Freeholder Deputy Director Susan Soloway recently reported.

Freeholder Soloway, the Health Department liaison, said, “These drop off programs are free of charge to residents. They are funded through a state recycling grant and, most importantly, they keep these waste products from being dumped in open spaces or along the roadside.

The recycling program recorded almost 1,000 residents and more than 43 tons of electronic waste was dropped off in March and more than seven hundred residents dropped off over 35 tons of electronic waste in June.”

“In September, at the final electronics drop off event, a record 1203 residents came through and dropped off more than 52 tons, for a total of 134.42 tons of electronic waste during the 2020 calendar year,” Soloway added.

Hazardous Waste drop off events occurred March, July and November. In March, more than 700 residents dropped off 35 tons of material and in July, 1,078 residents dropped off 48 tons of material. November information is forthcoming.

Rebecca Lunger, Solid Waste Division Head in the Health Department, said, “Being able to provide these drop off events for Hunterdon County residents benefits not only our residents, but the environment as well. Reducing environmental stresses and overall costs to county taxpayers by providing a free program so that difficult to dispose of waste can be easily and freely dropped off is a key component to the recycling program’s success.”

Between March and September, a cumulative total of more than 3800 residents participated in six recycling drop-off events, providing a valuable service which reduces costly cleanup of items too large or too hazardous for regular solid waste disposal.
