Radon Test Kits Available To Homeowners

The Hunterdon County Department of Health recently announced free radon test kits, one per home to county residents only, on a first come, first serve basis, provided by the NJ Department of Environmental Protection (DEP).

Freeholder Susan Soloway, the Freeholder Board’s Department of Health liaison said, “All homeowners in Hunterdon County should be taking advantage of this offer from the NJ Department of Environmental Protection. Radon testing is easy, and problems can be mitigated quickly.”

These free radon test kits are available for pickup at the Rt. 12 Department of Health office, Monday through Friday, 8:30 to 4:30pm. The office is on the 2nd floor of the Rt. 12 building.

Department of Health Director, Karen DeMarco said, “We are pleased to provide this program to protect residents from the dangers of radon exposure. Testing is the only way to know if you and your family are being exposed to radon.”

According to Joseph Ganguzza, of Safe Air Systems Radon Mitigation, LLc in Califon, radon is a colorless, odorless, tasteless gas that moves up through the soil and finds its way into homes and schools through cracks in the foundation and openings around sump pumps, pipes and drains. Radon readings fluctuate during different seasons, are impacted by air flow changes with heating and air conditioning systems and even new construction which may impact geology around the area of your home.

In addition to the program to test for radon in homes, the NJ Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) awarded grants of up to $2000 for schools throughout the state to conduct radon testing.
