Value of Volunteers Recognized By
Hunterdon Commissioners
The Hunterdon County Board of Commissioners, at the April 20 meeting, recognized April 18th through April 24th as Volunteer Appreciation Week in Hunterdon County with a Proclamation expressing appreciation for the value of those who volunteer and asked residents to thank local volunteers.
Director Susan J. Soloway said, “Over the course of the past year, we have seen volunteerism in action. Volunteers stepped up during the height of COVID-19 testing and are still lending a hand while the county provides COVID-19 vaccinations.
None of this could have been organized or executed without the selfless individuals rise to the call and get involved to help their fellow man. Recognizing their value to our community is the least we can do.”
National Volunteer Week was established almost forty-seven years ago and serves to bring attention to those people in our neighborhoods and towns who volunteer and inspire us to do better and give to others.
Deputy Director John E. Lanza commented, “There are ample opportunities for civic-minded individuals to serve the community. During summer months, local youth should feel empowered to take part in volunteering and year-round, Hunterdon County Government has volunteer opportunities in several departments.”
Deputy Director Lanza continued, “There are volunteer positions available such as the Hunterdon County Medical Reserve Corps, the Parks & Recreation Division, and the Cultural and Heritage Commission. Meals On Wheels is another community-based volunteer opportunity which serves the elderly and homebound individuals in the county.
Public Safety has several volunteer roles such as CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) and HAZMAT (Hazardous Materials Response Team), as well as the county Library which has volunteer positions open at all local branches. I would encourage residents to look at the county’s Volunteer Opportunities webpage on the county website.”

Through volunteering for the county, individuals gain valuable opportunities to learn a new skill or work experience, better understand how county government works, provide enhanced services for those in need or can choose to serve on a board, committee or commission, becoming involved in policy or voting on decisions which can impact their municipality.
National Volunteer Week is sponsored by the Points Of Light foundation and the organization offers information on how to volunteer, connects those in need with those who are willing to serve and recruits, trains and manages community volunteers.
