DIY Tips to Keep Ticks Out of Your Yard

Annually, 30,000 cases of Lyme disease in the United States are reported to the CDC by state health departments. Ticks, major carriers and spreaders of Lyme disease, hide in long grass and attach themselves to humans and animals to feed on their blood. They can spread this inflammatory disease, which is characterized by a rash, headache, fever and chills at first. However, symptoms can worsen into arthritis and neurological and cardiac disorders, caused by bacteria transmitted by ticks.

Ticks are the enemy of any outdoor enthusiast, parent, farmer or home owner. Check out these helpful tips on how to keep ticks out of your yard.

Add a Buffer

Ticks don’t like crawling on wood chips and gravel because it hurts their feet. Discourage ticks from crossing over onto the rest of your property by putting a buffer zone of this material between the edge of your lawn and your driveways and walkways.

Stack Wood Neatly

Ticks love to invade haphazardly-placed piles of wood in damp, shady areas. Always keep any wood on your property neatly stacked and in a dry area to discourage this behavior.

Keep the Lawn Trimmed

You can eliminate ticks’ preferred hangouts when you get rid of tall grass and brush, particularly at the edges of your lawn. You should also clean up yard debris such as leaves, and rather than throw grass clippings and leaves in the garbage, add them to a compost pile. You can then use the rich soil that results to enhance your garden.

Invest in Chickens

Chickens are great for supplying fresh eggs every day but did you know they can keep the tick population down as well? You could also add a bird feeder to your property because robins and other ground-feeding birds also feed on ticks. Just remember that ticks can also hitch a ride onto the backs of birds so you’ll need to keep areas around feeders and bird baths clear of debris. This will make it less likely those ticks will survive.

Incorporate Plants

Yes, you can spray yourself with DEET when outside to keep ticks off your body, but you can’t very well do this to your whole yard. One natural way to keep ticks from getting out of control is to plant American beauty-berry bushes. They’re pretty to look at but their leaves repel ticks.
