Freehold Boro Launches Summer Wellness Event Series

As a part of the mayor's wellness campaign, Freehold Borough is offering free yoga classes, walking tours, presentations and more.

FREEHOLD, NJ - Amid the relaxation of several pandemic-related restrictions, Freehold Borough Mayor Kevin Kane and the Mayor’s Wellness Committee has announced a series of free public events to get residents out of the house and engaged with the community.

Activities planned weekly throughout the summer range from challenging events like running with the mayor or bicycling around town to learning healthy recipes and taking leisurely walks around town. The program also includes free weekly yoga sessions and guest speakers presenting on various health topics.

“Mayor Kane wanted to establish a fun and free series of events designed to shake off the COVID Blues,” a press release from the borough reads. “The Mayor’s wellness committee held several brainstorming sessions and decided to offer something for everyone.”

Tuesdays are Healthy Recipe Days, with free healthy recipe cards offered with a cross promotion with the local farmer’s markets. Some weeks a local restaurant will demo the dish and put up a “how to” video on social media, while other weeks will see local restaurants offering the dish on their menu.

On Wednesdays, Council President Annette Jordan will lead a “Walk Around Town” starting from Borough Hall. The walks will have a weekly theme ranging from visiting historic sites to checking out the borough’s old Bruce Springsteen haunts.

Yoga in the Park will take place Thursdays, with a free introductory yoga program run by a qualified yoga instructor.

On Fridays, residents are invited to join tour leaders Paul Jensen and Chris Naspo as they bike around the borough and explore cool corners of the community and the Henry Hudson Trail.

On Saturdays, folks are invited to strap on their running shoes and join Mayor Kevin Kane at Lake Topanemus Park for a few laps through the woods.

“People are so tired of social distancing and staying home, these activities will help get people moving and meeting people again,” said Council President Annette Jordan.

“Our original idea was to get people thinking about healthy lifestyle changes and we received
a tremendous amount of support and input. Our schools, our police, our friends at CentraState hospital, our business community had all come together to plan a wonderful program,” Mayor Kane added.

The Mayor’s Wellness Committee is currently planning a big final celebration at the end of the summer.
