Freehold Boro Students Won’t See In-Person Classes Until 2021

The K-8 school district won't review public health conditions for in-person instruction until January 2021, according to the superintendent.

FREEHOLD, NJ - Despite initial plans to move 1,400 students to hybrid learning on Dec. 14, the Freehold Borough school district will remain virtual for the rest of 2020.

In a Nov. 30 letter posted to the district website, Superintendent of Schools Rocco Tomazic announced that students in the K-8 school district will not be returning to in-person hybrid instruction on Dec. 14 as previously discussed. Citing an increase in the area’s community virus spread and Freehold Borough’s designation as a high risk category for the virus by the COVID Regional Risk Assessment, Tomazic noted that the district will remain fully virtual until at least a moderate risk designation is achieved.

“The district will be constantly monitoring public health conditions, but in all cases, will thoroughly review the district status on Jan. 29, 2021, the end of Marking Period #2,” Tomazic wrote.

The district has been operating on an all-remote schedule since the school year began on Sept. 8.

Last month, the Freehold Boro Board of Education approved a plan to allow five special education classes at the Freehold Learning Center elementary school to follow a hybrid model. The hybrid model plan began Nov. 16.

However, according to Tomazic, all students will return to virtual learning beginning Dec. 3.

“The entire district will remain on full virtual learning following their normal full-day schedule comprising 100% synchronous instruction,” the superintendent wrote. “The district will remain fully virtual until such time that Monmouth County and Freehold Borough reliably return to Moderate Risk … and an updated transition plan for in-person hybrid instruction can be implemented.”
