Freehold Borough Swears In Youth Government

Students from the borough will advise the council on issues and projects important to the youth of Freehold.

The first Freehold Borough Youth Government representatives took their oath of office at the regular meeting at on March 2.

“I am thrilled about this youth government program,” said Councilwoman Shutzer. “These are the young people we should see on the front page of the newspapers. These are the young people who give us hope for tomorrow.”

13 students, grades 7-11, from , and St. John Vianney High School are participating in the program. The students meet weekly on Wednesday nights under the leadership of Councilman Simms.

“So often we hear the negatives about our youth and it is not often we hear about the positive things our youth are doing. So, tonight is a true testament of the wonderful young men and women we have here in Freehold,” said Councilman Jaye Simms about the students that stepped-up to be a part of this brand new program.

According to the resolution passed to establish this program, the youth government will advise the council on issues and projects important to the youth of Freehold. Through the program, the students will serve as representatives for the youth of the community by informing the council of the needs and wishes of their peers; they will plan and implement social educational, cultural and recreational activities for youngsters; and provide service and leadership opportunities.

The resolution states that in order to be a member of the youth government program, you much be a resident of Freehold Borough, attending a NJ junior high school, high school or home school, have at least a 2.5 GPA,  and maintain good citizenship. The term for members is concurrent with the school year, being from September 1 to June 30th. For all qualifications and requirements, see the full resolution to the top right of this article.

Councilman Simms said the group that was selected is excited and eager to get started in their new positions. “They have such a deep passion and truly care about the future of this borough, so I want to take time to thank them and the parents,” added Simms.
