Freehold Boro Little League Celebrates 61st Opening Day

Grab some peanuts and throw on a cap because the 61st Opening Day for Freehold Boro Little League is Saturday, April 14.

“In Freehold, it’s as big of an opening day as Yankee Stadium, just on a smaller scale,” said Rich Matteo, President of Freehold Boro Little League. “The parade and ceremonies gets everybody excited about baseball.”

The parade begins at 9:00 a.m. starts at the rail road parking lot by the . It heads down Main St. with a police escort, down to Center St., marches to 3rd St. and then ends at the .

Mayor Higgins will be at the parade and open day ceremonies to throw out the first pitch.

According to Matteo, there are about 150 kids in the program this year. There are 15 teams in the league: six t-ball teams with 4 to 6-year-olds, three minor league teams with 7, 8, and 9-year-olds; four major league teams made up of kids 9-12; one junior league team with 13 and 14-year-olds; and for the first time in almost a decade, there is a senior league team with 15 and 16-year-olds.

The junior and senior leagues play teams from surrounding area little leagues including Eatontown, Colts Neck and Bayshore.

All of the leagues will march in the parade dressed in their game day attire and there will be 6 full games played that day on the league’s fields. In addition to the parade, ceremony and games, the league will raffle off 6 Little League baseballs.
