Letter to the Editor: The Value of the Freehold First Aid Squad
Councilwoman Sharon Shutzer shares how a personal experience with the squad reminded her of their importance.
As is so often the case, we do not realize the true value of something until we need it or until we lose it. I have always held the in the highest regard: my husband and I always send checks during the annual fund drives, we always put signs in our yard urging other to donate money, and I always say all of the right words when publicly extolling the squad.
It was not, however, until I watched the squad members help save my husband’s life that I fully realized the worth of these individuals who unselfishly volunteer their time and their knowledge to serve the residents of the Freeholds. To see these dedicated and caring individuals come into a home and take over the care of a loved one is truly awe inspiring. It sounds trite to say that there are no words to describe the relief I felt when, on four occasions, the squad came to our rescue, but it is absolutely true. Until we had medical emergencies, my words and my feelings lacked passion. Now, however, I could not be more passionate about the enormous worth of the men and women who give so much of themselves to help others.
My husband and I support the Freehold First Aid Squad and we will continue to do so because we have witnessed first hand what they do and how invaluable they are. I encourage all of our residents to do the same. We do not have to wait for the formal fund drive; donations will graciously be accepted at any time.
