Monmouth County Prosecutor Resigns, Calls Position An ‘Honor’
County Prosecutor Christopher Gramiccioni has resigned from his position of nearly ten years, effective June 1.

MONMOUTH COUNTY - Monmouth County Prosecutor Christopher Gramiccioni has resigned from his role of nearly ten years, according to a letter provided by the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office.
Gramiccioni, 48, submitted the letter of resignation on April 30 to Gov. Phil Murphy. In New Jersey, county prosecutors serve as the chief law enforcement officer in a given county, are appointed by the governor for a five-year term and must be affirmed by the state senate.
The Monmouth County Prosecutor oversees the daily operations of over 300 employees and administration of a $23 million budget, as well as the coordination of 45 local police departments and two college police departments. Gramiccioni and his wife Deborah will be starting their own law practice, a spokesperson from the office confirmed to Patch.

Gramiccioni has held his position in Monmouth County for almost ten years, serving as legal counsel for the U.S. Navy, Special Assistant U.S. Attorney in San Juan, Puerto Rico and Assistant United States Attorney for the District of New Jersey before he started with the MCPO in 2012. He is also a member of the New Jersey, New York, Maryland and District of Columbia bars, a trustee of the 200 Club of Monmouth County and the Monmouth County Human Relations Committee.
“It has been one of my life’s greatest honors to serve as Prosecutor and chief law enforcement officer of this fine county for most of the past decade,” Gramiccioni wrote in his letter. “I am truly grateful to you and Governor Christie for the support your administrations have shown our law enforcement community.”

Gramiccioni, a Fort Monmouth native, served as acting county prosecutor for four years before then-Gov. Chris Christie nominated him to a five-year term as county prosecutor in 2016. It was not immediately clear whether Murphy, a Democrat, would re-nominate Gramiccioni, a Republican, when his term expires.
In his resignation letter, Gramiccioni stated that he stands “at the ready to assist my successor in any transition deemed necessary. The true testament to a fine organization is that it can function effectively through change. The Office of the Monmouth County Prosecutor is in good shape to handle these winds of change.”
