CAMDEN COUNTY, NJ — New data has been released that shows the coronavirus continues to have an impact on Camden County (see town-by-town totals below).

Camden County reported a one-year total of 44,654 coronavirus cases on Friday, an increase of 1,345 cases over the previous week. There have also been 1,135 coronavirus-related deaths in Camden County since the pandemic began.

“We are continuing to see increased numbers of new COVID-19 cases each day, with infection and test positivity rates remaining stubbornly high over the last several weeks,” Camden County Commissioner Director Louis Cappelli Jr. said on Friday. “Each day, thousands of county residents become fully protected against COVID-19 thanks to availability of vaccinations. It is critically important that everyone get their shot as soon as possible once they become eligible. The vaccines are safe, effective, and our best weapon in the fight against this disease.”

The disease’s impact is reflected in the state Department of Health's most recent "COVID-19 Activity Level Report," which is issued weekly. The most recent report, released Thursday, says Camden County is in the orange zone. This means there has been a rate of 10 to 25 cases per 100,000 people.

If the overall activity is at an "orange" level, state officials say, school districts in those counties would have to take more serious steps — such as quarantining or even shutting down schools — if a child shows the symptoms of COVID-19.

"When it is high risk, there are some recommendations that we make together with local school boards," said Edward Lifshitz, medical director for the state Department of Health.

Indeed, a number of school districts still provide remote instruction even as the number of new daily cases has dropped in recent weeks.
